Autumn Wanderings

September 26, 2012

To celebrate the Autumn Equinox my boys and I took a little wander through the woods near our house. It is so stunningly pretty around here, it is always a joy to explore even the well-trodden paths we take and see them change throughout the year. Even though the leaves are still quite green there is a nip in the air and we’ve had the woodburner going in the evenings.
My walk was also the first outing for the lovely Pixie hood and armwarmers I just got from Avalon Elf Coats. The maker Annabelle is an absolute sweetheart and can rustle up something special for you, or you can see what is currently available on her Folksy store.
Max’s really splendid Gnome coats comes from Haruka in Glastonbury (my most favourite clothing shop, everything they sell is gorgeous!).

Infamy!

August 24, 2012

My mum was very excited to pick up the local paper and find a photo of myself and Naomi gracing the cover! There is another photo inside, accompanying a little write up about Fairy Fest North. She tells me the paper has gone all round her work office and everyone is very impressed! …I shall try not to let the fame go to my head…

I’ve just had a few days off visiting my faery-kin Monkey and Flame down in Glastonbury. We mostly spent our time in the worthy pursuits of ranting late into the night, drinking mead and compiling a list of attractive men! Now I’m home it is back to the serious world of Elflock production – the Goblinlocks launch on September 1st! More news about them on Monday.

Finally, huge thank yous for the following Etsy Treasuries!

3 Wishes II

June 20, 2012

Just finished an epic processing session of all the photos from my Gloucestershire and 3 Wishes adventures. I had an amazing time! We visited Painswick Rococo Garden, Kelmscott Manor, Rodmarton Manor, Berkeley Castle and Snowshill Manor, and got to hang out with the awesome Chyna and Izzie in Cirencester. And then on to Cornwall to gather with the rest of the Faerie Clan for a weekend of music, nattering, excellent pizza and tent wrangling! Many thanks to Karen Kay for putting on the best event ever!
…Unfortunately I’ve very much come back to reality with a bump this week – my first tax return awaits…

Anyway, here are a few photos of the Faerie Fashion show:

We were also treated to an amazing trapeze act by Felicity Fyr Le Fay. She is so good! I made her a special pair of trapeze-friendly short Elflocks in a mix of Faery and Sprite to match her costume. They have a wonderful rag doll look… I’m thinking of offering these as a custom listing in the shop if people are interested?

Venezia

June 5, 2012

I have returned from my adventures abroad – but only briefly, as I’m flying off to Gloucestershire and then hence to Cornwall and 3 Wishes Faery Fest next Monday. The shop is open as normal between now and then.

Venice was glorious – beautiful weather, amazing food, epic shopping. I even got a little culture in there with a visit to the excellent Klimt exhibition at Museo Correr, the Gallerie dell’Accademia, and Museo Fortuny. I now have a fire in the head about making myself a Fortuny style dress (since no one seems to make them like that these days, and if they did I wouldn’t be able to afford it!). I bought some amazing printed velvet from Antonia Sautter’s inspiring shop, and got very excited in a stunning shop that sold Fortuny lamps and other lovelies. I did of course, return with masks – a Medici di Peste for my lovely husband, and a faerie faced leaf mask for myself from La Bottega dei Mascareri. I’m not quite back in the real world yet – I’ll have to ease myself back into the swing of things by making some elflocks this week!

Proto-Elflocks

May 22, 2012

I’ve been feeling a bit nostalgic and having a rummage through old photographs came across one of my first pair of Elflocks. I made these the best part of 10 years ago! My technique has evolved and improved since then, but these ones were quite lovely, so very PURPLE. Oh, I do miss that blue hair too (but not the upkeep)!

And while I’m here, many thanks to everyone who has included Elflocks in their Etsy treasuries recently:

Wycoller Adventures

April 24, 2012

I’ve just had a lovely weekend entertaining visitors from afar. We saw a lot of Pre-Raphaelite art, ate a lot of cake, explored the ruins at Wycoller and got mugged by ducks! Good times indeed!

Wycoller is a particularly magical spot not far from home. A hidden valley with a beck running through the centre, crossed by ancient bridges and the ruins of an old manor house. There is a duck pond inhabited by fearless ducks, who on spotting a small child with a bag of bread immediately swoop upon you and steal said bread.

I took the opportunity to take a few snaps of one of my most recent knitting projects. It is the Robin Hood Hat by Grace Akhrem, and I have used the softest, most delicious alpaca yarn to knit it, with antler buttons. I am in love! It manages to look Robin of Sherwood and vintage flapper all at the same time, which obviously is a very good thing!

Art of Chris Down

April 12, 2012

My lovely friend Chris Down has painted my portrait, featuring the first ever headdress I made in 2010.
Chris’ paintings feature quite a few other gorgeous friends too, and if fantasy art celebrating the female form is up your street do go check out his gallery. He also is master of Celtic designs with lots of cards, prints and books available to buy.

Sunshine Knits

March 27, 2012

I do hope you’ve been enjoying all the sunshine – I’ve been out in the garden getting stuck into a few personal knitting projects (I feel like it has been a while!). I finished off a cute ‘Holly Belly Warmer’ top for my son (who’s remark was ‘wow, it’s beautiful!’, which makes a nice change as he usually refuses to wear anything I’ve made him), and I also made myself a Magic Treetop Bag (from the wonderful Tiny Owl Knits pattern range). It didn’t turn out quite how I had in mind, but with some tinkering and the adding of some tiny red berry bells, I am liking it very much. Although I still need an over-sized wooden button for the front I think… I’ve also made two hats for some sweet twins who are turning three this week, and I’ve started on another hat for me!

My excuse for all this ‘not working’ is that I’ve just celebrated my birthday. My lovely boys took me on a early birthday/mothers day adventure last week to Bolton Castle in North Yorkshire.

It was amazing, a proper castle-castle! We saw knights at tourney, archery, medieval dancing and a falconry display (where Bilbo the owl decided he was going to fly inches above my head. Repeatedly. I’ve never before been thwacked on top of the head by an owl’s wing, but I can add that to the list now!).
